LinkedIN for Small Business in Geelong

I was asked the other day if I could speak to a group of Board Members about the benefits of LinkedIN for Small Business in Geelong. I thought great, sounds like a great opportunity to share my thoughts on social media and it’s benefits for small business.

Then I took a step back and thought about how I would approach this presentation. How do you tell someone about LinkedIN who haven’t even got an account and have no real idea about social media and how it can help a business.

We all know that LinkedIN isn’t just another social media network, it’s more than that, it brings you into contact with influential business people from your neighborhood and from all over the world.

It can help you source new highly skilled staff members, find new business partners locally and internationally, canvas new business-to-business (B2B) clients and connects you with service providers you may have never considered using!

But where do you start?

For the sake of this blog and for the presentation, I’m going to keep it local, real local! A good business network isn’t just built online and in Geelong, this is very much the case. Like I mentioned in my blog post last month, you need to begin your business network face to face! Get in touch with the Geelong Chamber of Commerce regarding their next chamber event.

Ok, that’s great but then what?

Once you have built your business network up on LinkedIN, don’t be afraid to contact your network. People connect with you because they believe that they could gain some benefit from you. In the same way, you would only connect with business people who you think may come in handy someday.

So once you connect, don’t be afraid to make contact. Request a meeting! Grab a coffee! The only way to further build your network is to make a personal connection with people, especially with business people that can benefit your business in some way.

There’s no exact science with social media and this is true with all networks, you just need to make it work for you. If you want to share information about your chosen field to your network, then do it! If you want to make contact with a potential staff member, then send them a message. Don’t just connect with 500+ business people and then just sit on it, what’s the point?

Get Referrals! One of the best ways to boost your LinkedIN profile is to get referrals from clients. This can be a bit awkward but just stop for a second and think about the clients that you have an awesome relationship with and just ask, they might say no but most often than not they’ll give you a great referral. In a small town like Geelong, where word of mouth is king, a LinkedIN referral from locals can go a long way.

The best kind of referral though is one that is given without asking, when you get one of those, it’ll put a smile on your face 🙂

There are many ways you can make LinkedIN work for your small business but like all social networks, you only get out what you put in. Set a goal on what you want to achieve within the network, ensure it’s feasible, then put it into action.
